Tulip armchair by designer Eero Saarinen produced by Knoll. The swivel base is in powder-coated cast aluminium and the seat shell is in moulded glass fibre. This design breaks the mould of the classic four-legged chair as does the material from which it is made. The removable seat cushion cover is attached to the seat with Velcro. 1950s.

Eero SaarinenSaarinen, son of the renowned architect Elien Saarinen and the talented sculptor Loja Saarinen, was born in Finland, but is an American by adoption. He studied at the Académe de la Grande Cheumiere in Paris and at Yale University in New Haven (Connecticut), graduating in 1934 with a degree in architecture. In 1937 he collaborated with Charles Eames, with whom he designed avant-garde furniture for Knoll International that would soon lead to international success. His search for new technologies in the use of materials, particularly in the moulding of fibreglass, made his pieces immortal. Among his best known and globally appreciated works, the Pedestal collection with the Tulip chair and table, for Knoll.
