C&B, or Cassina & Busnelli, was founded in 1966 by Cesare Cassina and Piero Ambrogio Busnelli with the aim of utilising the most innovative technologies to achieve a larger-scale, less artisanal production process. In 1973, Busnelli acquired Cassina’s shares and changed the company’s name to B&B Italia.
Mario Bellini (Milan, 1935) – one of the most important designers and architects of the 20th and 21st centuries, and the creator of iconic pieces of furniture – graduated with a degree in architecture in 1959 and began working as a self-employed architect during the 1960s.
Like many other Italian architects, his professional work spans architecture, urban planning and furniture design. His early international success grew rapidly during the first two decades, particularly in the field of design, reaching its peak in 1987 with the great recognition bestowed upon him through a solo retrospective at MoMA in New York, which includes 25 of his works in the Permanent Collection.
